Bridgette Reece and John Green invite you to their home for the annual BUMC Shrove Tuesday Gourmet Breakfast Buffet on Tuesday, February 21, 5:30 – 6:45 pm. Please RSVP by calling the church, 447-6633, or signing up in the narthex. Maps and directions are available at the church. Bring your appetite for what is sure to be a sweet feast! A love offering will go to the Berkeley UMC General Fund.

Secret Prayer Pals

Spiritual Care Committee invites the congregation to take part in the annual Valentine’s “Secret Prayer Pals” event. There is a Valentine Basket and Box in the narthex. You select a heart from the basket, write on it your prayer request or concern (anonymous is ok), and place it into the Valentine Box. On February 12th, the hearts will be drawn at random by everyone participating, for a week of intentional prayer focusing on the request written on the heart you’ve drawn. You may participate via your prayer request/concern, by praying for another’s concern, or you may do both. Share your heart and your time Valentine’s week!

Congratulations Letha Peters, Parish Christian Educator

This Sunday we will recognize Letha Peters, who completed the Parish Christian Educator program last week. Since 1991, PCE has offered a three-year quality educational experience for local church Christian Education personnel. It consists of a series of six courses, including reading assignments, writing and in-class participation. Twice-yearly sessions of three days each at Mt. Wesley in Kerrville are required for completion and recognition as a Parish Christian Educator in the Southwest Texas Conference. Letha has guided our program of faith development here at Berkeley and dedicated herself to the PCE program. We are proud of her achievement and appreciate her sharing her learnings with us.

Berkeley UMW Events in January

There are two upcoming UMW events for the month of January. The first one is the Austin District UMW Leadership Development meeting at the Smithville FUMC on Saturday January 21st at 9am. The second is the UMW Texas Legislative Event from Sunday-Tuesday January 22nd-24th in Austin. Please see the attached forms for registration and contact information.

The Upper Room Discipline is available for purchase from The Spiritual Care Committee. Fifty-three authors have contributed to this book of daily devotions which follows the lectionary readings for each week. Regular print books can be purchased for $9 and large-print versions $12. Advanced Lay Speaking Course

St. John’s UMC in Austin is hosting an Advanced Lay Speaking Course, “Lay Pastoral Care Giving”, on September 24 and October 1, 8:30 am – 4:00 pm. This 2-day course will help you identify and strengthen your skills in ministering with people. The cost is $40, including text and meals, and you may obtain a registration form from the BUMC church office. Contact Bill Cain at 345-4953 for more information.

Beginners Tai Chi Class – All Welcome!

Berkeley UMC member,Phyllis Coombes, is teaching a beginning Tai Chi class in Berkeley’s Fellowship Hall on Sundays from 4 to 5 p.m. These introductory classes are free, and may be continued with a nominal fee for participation. Health experts recommend Tai Chi for balance and fall prevention, strength training, arthritis, diabetes and improving circulation. Phyllis is a certified trainer and has been teaching for 5 years. Men and women, church members and members of the community are all welcome. Wear loose clothing and low heeled flexible shoes.
