Curious or concerned? Wonder about the church’s perspective? MARK YOUR CALENDARS and join us Saturday, August 21, 9:00 - 12:00 when Betty Armstrong will be at BUMC to present a program about Immigration as a Social Justice Issue. Betty is the Austin District UMW Mission Coordinator for Social Action. Men, women and youth are invited. Coffee and breakfast goodies will be available at 8:20 before the program begins at 9:00. If you need childcare for children under 12, please notify the church office or Susan Curtis (Curtis@io.com or 280-1313) by Wednesday, August 18th.

Disciple II Bible Study Coming this Fall

There will be a Disciple II Bible Study, Into the Word Into the World, being offered this fall for all interested participants. The orientation session will be held on Thursday September 2, 2010 and the first class will meet on Thursday, September 9, 2010. Disciple II is an in-depth bible study of Genesis - Exodus in the Old Testament and Luke-Acts in the New Testament. The study will last for 32 weeks involving nightly readings and a weekly meeting and will be facilitated by Junell Treece and Letha Peters.

Gilligan’s Island Bible Study

Did you know that the creator of Gilligan’s Island said he based the Seven Castaways on the Seven Deadly Sins? It’s true! In the Gilligan’s Island Bible Study, you’ll see how Gilligan is Sloth, the Skipper is Anger, the Professor is Pride, Ginger is Lust, Mary Ann is Envy, Mr. Howell is Greed and Lovey Howell is Gluttony! Don’t get stranded–hop aboard this fun Bible study today! The Spiritual Care Committee is offering this 7-lesson study on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. in the CLC beginning July 7th. Please contact the church office one week in advance if you will need childcare.

Conference-wide Bible study offered August 17-19, 2010

A conference-wide Bible study on the Gospel of John will be offered August 17-19, 2010 at Mt. Wesley. The Bible seminar/study will be led by Dr. Jamie Clark-Soles, a New Testament scholar from Perkins School of Theology at SMU. This study is open to both clergy and laity. Wesley Nurse

Starting Sunday, February 21^stBerkeley will have a Wesley nurse, Rebecca Sweet, available to visit with the congregation about health concerns. She will be checking blood pressure and screening for diabetes. She will be here the 3^rd Sunday of every other month. Her next visit will be Sunday, August 22nd. Partnering with Cunningham Elementary

Berkeley UMC has officially adopted Cunningham Elementary through the Austin Partners in Education (APIE). We need your continued involvement to help make this partnership a success! And, we are on our way: The Berkeley UMW provided breakfast for staff at the beginning of the semester. Church members have donated needed backpacks, school supplies, and shoes. All items have been much appreciated!

Do you want to stretch a bit farther - perhaps through direct service? Children await your response. Cunningham needs mentors. Mentors meet once a week with one student for the school year. Mentors focus on developing a relationship with their students that builds self-confidence and helps students set goals for the future. Mentors attend 1.5 hours training session before being matched with a student. For more information, see the APIE website.
