United Women in Faith
Formerly known as United Methodist Women (UMW), United Women in Faith is an organization of approximately 800,000 members worldwide whose purpose is to foster spiritual growth, develop leaders and advocate for justice. Women and girls of all ages are welcome to attend. Berkeley has two UWF circles which meet once a month: Women in Action (WIA), who meet on the second Wednesday at 9:30 am; and Women in God’s Grace (WIGG), who meet on the fourth Saturday at 7:30 am. UWF members sponsor mission work, educational programs, and raise money for programs and projects related to women, children and youth in the United States and in more than one hundred countries.
Many BUMC women also participate in the UWF Reading Program. The UWF Reading Program offers an opportunity for women to grow in their understanding of scripture, God’s mission and sensitivity to all human needs. Detailed information is available at Reading Program.

"United Women in Faith seeks to connect and nurture women through Christian spiritual formation, leadership development, creative fellowship, and education so that they can inspire, influence and impact local and global communities."
United Methodist Men
United Methodist Men (UMM) aims to help men grow in Christ and serve others. Berkeley’s UMM group meets for breakfast at 7:28 am on the third Saturday of each month. Food, fellowship and faith discussions make the meetings lively and thought provoking. The men of Berkeley support the Wesley Student Ministry at the University of Texas and perform maintenance and repair work at the church and for our members who need help with projects.
Fall 2024 Study Preview
Submitted by Rev. Rusty Teeter and Roz Hodson. May 2024

Roz Hodson and the Spiritual care Team are excited about a study we are introducing over the book Upward! by By Steve Harper and Dr. Paul W. Chilcote I love this paragraph on the authors’ view of the Wesleyan humility approach to life. It’s good for us to think about in everyday life and as we relate to each other and others. Books are available in the BUMC office if you’d like to get started. Call the church office at 512-447-6633 or email office@berkeleyumc.org for more information.

An excerpt from Upward! by Paul W. Chilcote and Steve Harper:
Moving upward means assuming a posture of humility in relation to others. The platform of grace leads us seamlessly to this insight. The spirit and wisdom of Methodism depend heavily on the quest for this virtue in life. Indeed, as all the great saints of the church have demonstrated, only humility provides an effective antidote to the disease of human pride - hubris. The Wesleys believed, therefore, that humility is the key to the Christian life. They learned this lesson most certainly through the influence of their parents. As young men they were both deeply influenced by the witness of great devotional writers like Thomas á Kempis who made humility the keynote of their vision of life in Christ. They took their ultimate clues from the life of Jesus - the self-emptying servant. God's invitation for us to assume the posture of humility speaks volumes about the nature of love.
Pray Through the Lord's Prayer
First Sundays at 6pm in the Sanctuary
Join us in the sanctuary as we pray through the Lord's Prayer together. This is beneficial for growing in your own prayer life. It brings us together as a community to pray for each other, our families, the church, the world, etc. The Lord's Prayer provides a pattern of prayer that gives a chance to express what's on our hearts and to listen for God's answer and guidance.
CALL Bible Study Overview:
Who We Are
A Discipleship Group is a gender-specific group of 4-5 people (including the leader) who meet together weekly for 6-9 months for the purpose of spiritual transformation. Other groups exist for the purposes of community growth, fellowship, service and learning, but Discipleship Groups focus on growing a deeper relationship with Christ. The format of a Discipleship Group is not one of a teacher-student, but rather a roundtable discussion that is anchored in the CALL Process.
What is the CALL Process?
Each Discipleship Group gathering follows the same 4-step CALL Process.
-
Celebrate: Share where you saw God at work the past week in you, around you and through you.
-
Action: Share how you lived out what you heard from Jesus in response to the Scripture. Be encouraged and surrounded with prayer.
-
Learn It: Engage in Discovery Bible Study. Pray for the Holy Spirit to reveal His truth about the Scripture and what it is saying to you at the same time.
-
Live It: Be still. Use your journal to write what you hear Jesus say to you and how you will respond. Listen and obey throughout the week.
What is a Discovery Bible Study?
A Discovery Bible Study (DBS) is a discipleship study which enables people to read the Bible and discover what it has to say to them. Discovery Bible Studies work best in small groups, preferably people who already know each other. Simple, memorable questions allow participants to understand the character of God, encourage them to obey what they are learning and help them to share it with others.
The simple questions are…
-
What happens in this passage?
-
What does the Scripture say that is true about God
-
What does the Scripture say that is true about people?
-
What is the main point of this Scripture and why is it in the Bible?
